Here are some solid jewellery care tips you can use — whether for your own pieces or as care guidance for Grit's Glitz customers.

General care

Put jewellery on last (after makeup, perfume, hairspray) and take it off first when you get home — those products cause most of the dulling and tarnishing.
Avoid wearing pieces in the shower, pool, or hot tub. Chlorine and prolonged water exposure can weaken clasps and discolour metals and stones.
Take rings off before cleaning, gardening, exercising, or doing dishes — this prevents both damage to the piece and scratches on surfaces.
Believe it or not, wearing your pearls and gemstones from time to time is the key to keeping them looking young and pretty! Jewellery loves to be loved — regular wear helps prevent pearls from drying out and keeps gemstones looking their best. :)

Storage

Store pieces separately (a lined box, soft pouches, or hanging organiser) so they don't tangle or scratch each other.
Keep silver in an airtight, moisture-resistant bag (a reusable plastic bag works well) or box with an anti-tarnish strip if possible — air exposure and moisture are what cause tarnishing.
Keep pearls and softer stones (opal, turquoise) away from harder gems that could scratch them, and store pearls flat, not hanging, to protect the string.
Always dry pieces thoroughly before storing — damp storage causes tarnishing much faster than normal wear does.

Cleaning by material

Sterling silver: a silver polishing cloth for light tarnish; for deeper tarnish, a mild soap and warm water soak, then dry thoroughly. Polishing cloths available for purchase in our online store.
Gold-plated/vermeil: wipe gently with a soft cloth or special gold cleansing cloth — avoid soaking or abrasive cleaners, which can wear away the plating. Cleansing cloths available for purchase in our online store.
Gold-filled: more durable than gold-plated thanks to a much thicker gold layer, and resists tarnishing well with normal use. Still avoid harsh chemicals like chlorine and perfume, which can wear through the gold layer over time. Clean with a soft cloth or warm water with a drop of mild soap; dry thoroughly and skip abrasive cloths or ultrasonic cleaners.
Gemstones: warm water with a drop of mild dish soap — absolutely no other detergents — and a soft toothbrush works for most stones, but avoid this method for porous or treated stones like opal, pearl, turquoise, or emerald.
Beaded or strung pieces: avoid soaking, since water can weaken the thread or elastic over time — wipe instead.

A few extra tips

Handmade and delicate pieces (wire-wrapped, resin, polymer clay) often need gentler care than mass-produced jewellery.
Taking jewellery off before bed is recommended — it reduces wear from tossing and turning and contact with lotions/oils.
