About the brand - Grit's glitz

Our Brand Philosophy

“Grit” means a small stone. “Glitz” suggests sparkle. Together, they capture our belief: even the tiniest stone can dazzle once it’s polished. In life, just like in jewelry, persistence and self-acceptance can uncover something extraordinary.

Grit’s Glitz creates delicate, eclectic designs using a wide range of quality materials. Our creativity is sparked by collaborations and experimentation, always guided by the desire to inspire and connect.

Our Brand Stories

I’ve probably shared our brand philosophy a hundred times, but this is the first time I’m telling our story from the very beginning. Please forgive me if I ramble—I know I’m not the best writer. But this is a tribute to my dear friend, mentor, and sister at heart: Gritty.

Like many good stories, ours began with two friends chasing dreams. We had just finished our part-time studies in Communication & New Media (it was loooong time ago, so let’s face it, is no longer that “new” now). Gritty was my team leader during the course and had years of experience in the fine jewellery business. After we graduated, she decided to turn her passion for jewellery-making into a business and asked me to join her. She wanted someone to look after the technical, sales and marketing side. I was young and full of that “why not?” energy—so I said yes, even though my mum shouted a firm “no!”

Gritty named her company DaGrits, short for “dazzling grits”—a beautiful name, don’t you think? She was a hardworking, determined woman who overcame a tough childhood. Her life philosophy was simple yet powerful: even the tiniest, roughest stone can be polished with perseverance and shine in ways you never imagined.

We shared everything—work, dreams, and bits of our personal lives. She was the sister I had always longed for—leading me, guiding me. We were business partners, but also much more.

With just the two of us, we did everything ourselves. Gritty handled design and production, while I managed the website and social media. For sales, marketing, and collaborations, we brainstormed and worked side by side.

One day, she asked if I wanted to learn wire-wrapping jewellery. Of course, “why not?” I said yes again—and that’s how my own jewellery-making journey began. After months of practice, Gritty encouraged me to sell my designs alongside hers. She even suggested launching a second line for non-precious metal jewellery. That’s when I came up with the name Grit’s Glitz—a sister brand to DaGrits, with shared meaning and the same philosophy. She said yes immediately.

That year was tough but full of joy. At the time, handmade jewellery was still a new concept in Hong Kong. Our mission wasn’t just to design and sell, but to rediscover the value of craftsmanship. Hong Kong had once thrived on its skilled artisans, but rising land costs had driven factories away, and people turned to fast, mass-produced goods. We wanted to remind them of what we once took pride in—quality, creativity, and heart.

Along the way, we met wonderful people who believed in the same things. We built friendships that still mean the world to me.

We took part in markets and bazaars, secured consignment spots at indie jewellery shops, and even opened our first tiny office and showroom in a Tsim Sha Tsui upstairs building. Just when things were starting to take off, Gritty began to feel unwell. At first, she thought she was just exhausted. Her husband and I convinced her to get a proper check-up—and the diagnosis came like a lightning bolt: cancer.

I was lost. Gritty had always led the way. But I picked up the reins and told myself I was only holding the fort until she came back.

But she didn’t.

Instead of welcoming her back, I had to say goodbye.

Gritty left us far too soon. But her spirit, her grit, and her sparkle live on in every piece I make.

Grit’s Glitz is not just a jewellery brand. It’s a memory. A promise to keep shining—even when life feels rough.

Are you ready to shine? Let's shine together.

About Me

Hi My name is Alice. I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the UK in 2021. I've been working in handmade jewellery since 2008. At first, my partner and I concentrated more on offline sales like selling at local bazaars and consignments. But ever since I became a mother, everything has changed. My child has become my top priority and I stepped back for a bit. Now as my child is growing fast, I think it’s time for me to work hard on my dream again. This online shop is my new attempt in the UK, for me to pursue my dream. Welcome to my shop!
